Amal is one of the founding members of the Women of Multicultural Ethnicity Network and the founder of the Equality Centre in Hafnarfjordur. As an alternate MP for the Social Democrats, Amal made history by becoming the first foreign-born woman to sit in the Icelandic Parliament. She has been working with immigrant issues for over ten years and continues to be active in advocating the rights of immigrants, especially women of foreign origin
